  • Pinhote was found by a good samaritan after being dumped on the Pinhoti Trail.

Pinhote, or Pinny as she’s nicknamed, is a gal after our own hearts. She’s at an age where she knows what she likes and what she doesn't and if that bothers someone, well, that’s their problem! But, wait! There’s so much more to this special senior!

Pinny recently spent time in a temporary foster home prior to and after having some dental work done.  She does still resource guard food and treats around other dogs and cats but when food isn’t around, she isn’t as cranky as she used to be. In her foster home there were 4 other dogs in the home: a young dog with puppy energy, a very opinionated adult hound mix, a fun policing pitty mix, and a another spicy senior. She did well with all of them—even the pesky 1-year-old! There were also 3 cats, which she seemed mostly unconcerned with and only tried to chase when she thought food was around or she was excited. We believe she could live in a home with other dogs and cats provided she is properly managed around the other pets and she would really benefit from muzzle training to provide an extra layer of protection for other pets in the home just in case someone gets cranky.

Pinhote can appear a standoff-ish to people she isn’t familiar with but once she gets to know you, you’ll learn she will come to you when she wants pets but mostly she just wants to be in your presence.

Pinny has a fair amount of arthritis in her spine and her back right knee is bad but this gal still needs her exercise and enjoys a good walk or hike. She seems to think she was born to be a sled dog but her foster did start working with her on loose-leash walking. Pinny knows “sit” and she is learning “leave it”, “down”, “stay”, and “wait” and she is eager to learn more if it means more treats! She loves a frozen peanut butter-stuffed Kong or a fun puzzle toy to keep her mentally stimulated. Her foster learned she is an expert treat catcher! Toss it and she’ll catch it nearly every time!

Pinhote does seem to suffer from separation anxiety and she struggles with confinement. She’s not a bad girl. She’s not trying to be difficult. She just wants to be wherever her people are because scary things can happen when you’re alone. We believe she could be crate trained provided it is done at her pace with patience and empathy for a special soul who is scared to be abandoned again.

Pinny doesn’t care about your Chamber of Commerce award or that you believe in your heart you’re an EGOT winner, just give her a tennis ball and watch her jaunt around like she’s just won a trip to the moon! The pep in her step is truly magical to observe. If you’re looking to give someone a soft place to land for the time they have left, consider this special senior lady.
